Midday Update

Good afternoon!

Another update on Sage's condition:

First of all, some background: As explained in an earlier post, Sage was admitted to the hospital with septic shock. She is being treated for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Since admission to the hospital, she has been on oxygen ventilators.



The doctors have as yet been unable to get a CAT Scan due to Sage's condition, and the source of the initial infection remains unknown.
However, Sage has been holding strong, and is now showing signs of improvement overnight and through the morning. Her vital signs improved over night and are remaining steady. Her antibiotic treatments have remained the same, and based on her current condition, Sage's doctors are preparing to add a line for nutrition. Sage is also requiring less blood pressure support from medication. Her kidneys, too, are doing well.

Sage's liver remains enlarged, with abnormal function tests, but this is largely attributed to the significant blood pressure drop that occurred on Thursday as she moved from the Brattleboro Hospital to DHMC. 

Last night, Sage's chest was x-rayed, and the films show significant improvement in her lungs. The left lung has greatly reduced infiltrates, meaning that there is improvement in aeration. Sage is oxygenating well with lower demands from the ventilator.

On another positive note, Sage's white blood cell count has dropped by nearly half.


Overall, Sage's condition has certainly improved since last night, and the day is going to be taken hour-by-hour. All developments for the near future are expected to be slow and steady baby steps.
